Tailgating

To the guy who is always complaining about the Penn State tailgating at their football games, I would like to tell him that, hey, Prohibition has been over for 60 years. This goes on at most universities and colleges before football games and after. Frog's take: To quote the great Homer Simpson. "Here's to alcohol: The cause of and solution to all of life's problems."

'Alleged'

One thing that gripes me more than anything is this alleged and suspect crap that's always in the papers and news about a criminal who is caught red-handed like the Fort Hood shooter. He's only alleged to have done it; he is only a suspect who may have done it. He did it! He was seen doing it. He is no longer alleged, he is no longer a suspect, he is the perpetrator of the crime. If it looks, acts and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. The country is way out of control with these liberals and senile judges and money-hungry lawyers who blame everything on anything but the criminal.

Thanks again, but...

I, along with all veterans, would like to say thank you to Applebee's for the dinner they gave us. It is not simply that it was free, but it was the gesture. I am a Vietnam vet who only got grief when I returned home. I was spat on and called many names, including baby killer. Not one thank you from anyone. So, thank you, Applebee's, for thinking of us veterans. Maybe I missed seeing one, but there was nothing showing thanks in the Shamokin-Mount Carmel area - not even a sign giving thanks to veterans.

Survival of the fittest

All the jobs saved or created? Evidently, not here in Shamokin. In fact, small businesses are folding and, when our electric bills go up 30 percent in January, along with natural gas, oil, gasoline, telephone, cable and rent, then what? Welcome to the ghost town of the city of Shamokin, a once-bustling and thriving community. Many of us are on fixed incomes. How do we survive? No taxes collected from abandoned properties all these years. (Somebody was asleep at the switch!) Foreclosures coming, too! Can't even get these eyesores torn down because of red tape.

'Lavatory reliever'

I didn't realize that the playground area at North Walnut Street in Mount Carmel was a dog-relief transfer station. Last night at 6 o'clock I witnessed a young lady in a red Jeep pull up and turn her lights off and this big, huge "Lavatory Reliever" jumped out, ran around the playground and did his thing. Then he ran back and jumped in the car and the young lady drove off. I wish I could have got her license number. It is a shame when people bring their dog to a different neighborhood to do their thing.

Two weeks to doom

It seems that every two weeks there is another drug bust and more people get arrested. Between Shamokin and Mount Carmel, it sounds like half the place is in jail now for drug smuggling, drug sales, drug this and drug that. Just as they said. Bring the prison and here come the drugs, and here come the gangs. Just what we needed.

Many thanks

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to the person who turned in my purse at the service desk at Scot's on Saturday. It is heartwarming to know there are still honest people in this world. Once again, many thanks, and God bless you.

Beautiful programs

This call is in response to the disgusted vet. If the children were not in school on Veterans Day, they would not have experienced the beautiful programs that were provided by all the area schools. Yes, the children were off Friday, but the teachers were in school for an Act 80 day. They did not have a three-day weekend. Check your facts before you criticize.

If you are disgusted with the drug and gang situation... there is a panel discussion and Q&A session out at the Shamokin high school on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm. Maybe it is time for all of us to stop complaining and start taking action.
