Pie in the sky

There's no such thing as "clean coal." And if we'd subsidize solar as much as fossil fuels, and add in all the costs, solar would be a lot cheaper than coal. More reliance on coal will only give us the same things it did before, like robber barons, horrible working conditions, a filthy town, orange creeks and black lungs. That's some heritage, huh?

Permanent vacation

Don't you just love the people who are on welfare and the unemployed who say they are going on vacation? A vacation from what? Judge Judy and General Hospital? I work 40-plus hours a week and I can't afford to take a day off to see the doctor. I don't get it.

Washed away

The iron bridge that was behind BRL was lying in the creek after the flood. Now it disappeared. I would just like to know who took it or scrapped or what. Is somebody going to replace it? It was used by a lot of people.

It's a sin

I am calling to say I agree with Malcolm Farrow's letter to the editor. I think it is way past the time that term limits should be imposed on all the politicians, because they are doing whatever they want to and we are paying for it.

No sympathy

I just read the advertisement/article about the Tafners, and I am sorry about the death of Carter. However, I have no sympathy for Thea Tafner.

I'll remember

I just would like to say that I would have applied for the secretary position for the city, especially since it was full time. But our city council just took it upon themselves to hire somebody from out of town. I'll remember that come election time.

Missed the train

I noticed they are installing state-of-the-art railroad crossing signals behind Weis in Shamokin. Are we expecting more rail traffic in this area? Frog's take: Yes we are. We have reported on that numerous times over the past year, and again today.

Tight-lipped

Thanks to The News-Item for publishing the article on the high price of gas and also Greg Maresca's column on Obama and the high price of gas. Many of you blamed Bush when the gas was high a few years, but now it is twice as high and nobody is saying anything.

Purple hardship

I am a graduate of Shamokin Area School District and I received my letter on the weekend asking me if I can assist them because of their financial hardship. I am no longer a resident of that district or that county but, just curious, I wonder what percentage the administration, teachers and staff are donating from their paychecks?

The big picture

I would bet dollars to donuts that all those who complained about the Jesus picture missing from the Shamokin Hospital never knew there was a spiritual center at the hospital. There are those who pretend to be religious and get offended at little things, and there are those who are religious and look at the big picture. Frog's take: If you listen to some of the callers, they believe Obama came in and removed the portrait of Jesus.
