- The union of the Shamokin and Coal Township school systems was nearing reality. It was announced that, contrary to initial belief, Coal Township would not enter the new system debt free, but still had a bonded debt of some $70,000 on the books.

- John J. Glennon was elected president of the area Junior Chamber of Commerce at a Jaycee meeting in Shamokin and, at the Elks Club, 45 area bankers met and named Thomas Troyan of Union National Bank, Mount Carmel, as their president.

- Area viewers were looking forward to a television special called "The Miner's Story," which was to be hosted by Jack Palance, the actor who originally came from Lattimer, near Hazleton, and who had once been a coal miner himself.

- Woolworth's in Shamokin was advertising hoagies on sale, four for a dollar.

- In sports, Richie Allen, a great athlete from western Pennsylvania with only one personality clash in all the years he spent in Major League Baseball, was a holdout with the Phillies. Allen said he knew the salary he was asking for was huge but he was worth it. He wanted $25,000 a year.

- At the Victoria, Shelley Winters starred in "A House is not a Home."

- All over the area, parents were throwing their hands in exasperation as they vainly tried to help their kids add, multiply and divide using base numbers. The program was called "The New Math."
