Northumberland County is among 40 Pennsylvania counties under a tornado watch issued Monday morning by the National Weather Service.
The tornado watch was issued at 9 a.m. and is in effect until 5 p.m., according to data collected at the NWS storm prediction center in Norman, Okla.
Neighboring counties included in the tornado watch are Columbia, Montour, Schuylkill, Snyder and Union.
NWS is predicting stormy weather today. A cold front moving through Central Pennsylvania is forecast to produce showers and thunderstorms and heavy rain along with a slight chance of severe wind gusts.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a tornado watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms to form, a few of which are capable of producing a tornado. A tornado warning, meanwhile, means a tornado is either occurring or imminent and people should take cover immediately.
