MOUNT CARMEL - Students in Mount Carmel Area School District were given the opportunity to transform their ideas into film through a script-writing and video production summer camp held at the high school under the direction of WKMC-TV director David McFee and communications teacher Diane Rumbel.
During the camp, July 19 to 23, students in grades 7 to 10 were guided through all aspects of video production, including brainstorming ideas, script-writing, story-boarding, filming and lighting techniques, capturing, editing and publishing. In addition to producing and directing, students also acted in their films.
Working in teams, students developed five-minute, entertaining videos on school survival tips and Tasaday cavemen's discovery of fire. While students predominantly learned about writing and video production, they also participated in daily team-building activities reinforcing the ideals of working as a group to complete a project.
A culminating activity on the final day included a field trip to WVIA-TV studios, Pittston, where students toured the facility and talked with personnel about careers in broadcasting.
This is the second year the camp has been offered. It was funded this year by the Teens in Innovational Structures (TIES) program through the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit.
