Worker struck, killed by van while directing traffic in Mahanoy Township
MAHANOY CITY - A tree service employee was killed Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle on the Frackville-Morea Highway in Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County.
William R. Hoffman, 66, of Pottsville, was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 a.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak, of Shenandoah.
The driver of the vehicle, Cathy Ann Moss, 67, of Barnesville, was wearing her seat belt and was not injured, state police at Frackville said.
The crash occurred about 12:50 p.m. on Route 1008, about a half mile west of the junction with Route 54.
Trooper Joseph Aponick of the Frackville station said Moss was driving a 2001 Dodge Caravan west when she struck Hoffman in the westbound lane.
Aponick said Hoffman was in the roadway directing traffic and that he was employed by a contractor working in the area. The name of the contractor was not immediately available.
The trooper said there was a temporary need for traffic control at the time of the crash, but did not elaborate.
Mahanoy City EMS personnel were called about 12:55 a.m. and determined the man's injuries were fatal.
Part of the highway was shut down for several hours after the incident.
An accident reconstruction expert from the Jonestown barracks assisted at the scene.
Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Joseph Pothering, Minersville, assisted Szczyglak.
Szczyglak said a virtual autopsy was to be conducted Thursday night and a full autopsy was planned for Friday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.
Aponick said the investigation into the incident is continuing.
