WAYNE TOWNSHIP - A 22-year-old Auburn woman died Friday after suffering injuries in a two-vehicle head-on crash at the intersection of Route 183 and Lutz Valley Road in this Schuylkill County township.
State police at Schuylkill Haven reported Courtney L. Hengen succumbed to her injuries suffered in the 9:49 a.m. accident at Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown, where she was flown by Life Flight helicopter. Hengen was a passenger in a 2004 Mazda 3 driven by Eric A. Mitchell, 19, of Auburn.
Police said Mitchell was driving north on Route 183 when he lost control of his car, which veered off the east side of the road and skidded to the left into the oncoming lane, where it was struck head-on by a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck operated by Tina M. Walker, 54, of Fredericksburg, who suffered serious injuries in the accident and was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Reading Hospital.
Mitchell and an infant passenger in his car suffered minor injuries and were taken by ambulance to Schuylkill Medical Center South in Pottsville. William W. Waker II, 53, of Fredericksburg, a passenger in the truck, suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to Reading Hospital.
Police said all the adult occupants were wearing seat belts, while the infant was secured in a child safety seat.
The accident remains under investigation.
