SHAMOKIN - Dozens celebrated Shamokin's annual Coal Drop at Market and Independence streets despite snowy conditions Thursday night.

Shortly before midnight, residents throughout the area arrived at the normally busy intersection to help bring in the new year.

With 10 seconds left in 2009, councilman and Mayor-elect George Rozinskie led the crowd with a final countdown as Shamokin police officers slowly lowered a replica of a piece of anthracite coal.

When 2010 arrived, friends and family rejoiced, while some couples shared a passionate kiss.

A fireworks display illuminated the area as a radio blared celebratory music.

Rozinskie thanked the following for making this year's Coal Drop a success:

Klacik Associates, Independence Fire Company, Shamokin Fire Bureau, Shamokin city workers, Shamokin Police Department, Rent-A-Center for the television that was used to broadcast TV coverage of New Year's Eve activities, and Denny Moore for providing a trailer that was used as a stage.
