Weis Markets to issue refunds Technology error caused multiple transactions for debit and credit card users
SUNBURY - Approximately 4,800 Weis Markets customers will be receiving refunds after a technology error caused multiple transactions for those who used debit and credit cards.
In a statement released Thursday, the company said their payments processor, First Data, of Atlanta, Ga. experienced an outage and their back-up system did not function as designed.
Weis said that customers that shopped and used a credit or debit card between 5 p.m. and midnight Saturday, Sept. 28. First Data apologized for the errors in a statement provided by Weis Markets.
"We are very sorry for all the inconveniences this issue has caused Weis Markets and its customers, and are diligently working into what happened to prevent this from happening again," the company said.
Weis' information technology and customer service teams have been working closely with First Data to identify duplicate transactions and the payment processor has informed the Sunbury company that it has issued refunds to all impacted cardholders.
The Weis Markets Customer Service team completed calls Wednesday evening to those Weis Club Card members that had been impacted. First Data said that refunds were made beginning Oct. 1 and completed Oct. 2. The timing of when a customer's refund is posted is entirely dependent on his or her individual bank's procedures. Most customers will see their refunds posted within 24 hours, but it could take up to 48 hours.
Weis representatives said in a statement, "At Weis Markets, our goal is to provide an exceptional shopping experience that includes a smooth checkout process and complete customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, this technical error by First Data disrupted that service. We apologize for the confusion and problems experienced by our customers. We are analyzing this incident with First Data closely to prevent it from happening in the future."
Any Weis customer that believes they were affected by this can contact First Data directly at 1-800-511-1450 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. First Data can confirm that refunds have been made and answer customer questions. The company will also address overdraft fees that may have resulted from these transactions.
