The Southern Columbia Area School District's property tax increase referendum was soundly defeated in Tuesday's election.

The voters' verdict: 1,911 against, and only 161 in favor.

In Ralpho Township, the vote was 85 "yes" and 733 "no."

In the portion of the school district situated in Columbia County, there were only 76 "yes" votes compared to 1,178 "no" votes.

Approval would have allowed the district to raise taxes above the Act 1 limit.
