Veteran is Shamokin native
With Memorial Day in mind, a local resident brought to our attention the accompanying story from the Lebanon Daily News from last November. The story is reprinted with permission.
John W. "Jack" Lawrence, now 92, is a Shamokin native who grew up on Clay Street and lived in the city until he left for the Army at age 19. His parents, Herbert and Lottie Lawrence, are buried in Oddfellows Cemetery in Coal Township.
His daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Gary Tharp, live in Elysburg. A son from his first marriage, John, died in the 1980s.
Lawrence has lived in Lebanon for about 40 years and has been married to his current wife, Claudia, for 30 years.
