Tuesday's deadline for filing nomination petitions passed with six candidates, four Democrats and two Republicans, vying to succeed retiring Rep. Robert E. Belfanti Jr. (D-107).
Among the six was one candidate who had not formally announced his candidacy - Republican Samuel J. Scicchitano, former chairman of the Mount Carmel Township Board of Supervisors.
The other Republican candidate is Northumberland County Commissioner Kurt Masser.
Scicchitano was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.
Democratic candidates for Belfanti's seat are Coal Township Commissioner George Zalar, Kulpmont Mayor Myron Turlis, Ted Yeager, chairman of the Municipal Authority of Ralpho Township, and Steve Bartos, renewable/alternative energy coordinator for the 107th district, who has been on leave since he announced his candidacy.
The candidate listings, published on the Pennsylvania Department of State Web site, were complete as of 4:43 p.m. Efforts to access the site to determine if there were any last-minute filings Tuesday afternoon were unsuccessful.
In the 108th Legislative District, one announced legislative candidate, Stanley Geiswhite, 47, of 1021 Penn St., Sunbury, did not file nomination petitions.
Contacted Tuesday, Geiswhite explained he originally had 350 signatures - a person only needs 300 to be on the ballot for the primaries - but lost nearly 100 of those signatures due to mistakes on the forms.
He would have been the fifth candidate in the running.
Candidates in the 108th district are attorney Antonio Michetti, of Jordan Township, the lone Democrat, and Republicans Lynda Schlegel-Culver, a legislative aide for Phillips, of Rockefeller Township; Charles E. Erdman Jr., current Northumberland County controller, of Point Township, and Samuel Deitrick, current jury commissioner and former Northumberland County commissioner, of Sunbury.
Merle Phillips, the current state representative from the 108th District, is not seeking re-election.
In the 10th Congressional District, Democrat Christopher Paul Carney, of Dimock Township, will defend his position in the general election against one of the following Republicans: David Madeira, of Lehman Township, Thomas A. Marino, of Lycoming Township, or Malcolm L. Derk, of Freeburg.
