Two girls die in Columbia County car accident, third is in critical condition
FISHING CREEK TOWNSHIP - Two young sisters from Berwick were killed Friday morning when a vehicle driven by their mother collided with another vehicle on Route 487 in this Columbia County township.
Abigail Haskell, 8, and Charlotte Haskell, 3, were pronounced dead at the scene of the 9 a.m. crash by Columbia County Deputy Coroner Wendy Statshey.
The girls' 5-year-old sister, Allison Haskell, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where she was listed in critical condition Friday evening, according to a nursing supervisor.
The three siblings were passengers in a vehicle operated by their mother, Amanda J. Haskell, 28, of Berwick, who also suffered injuries and was listed in fair condition at Geisinger.
State police at Bloomsburg said the other driver, Richard L. Spicher, 37, of Lewisburg, escaped injury.
According to police, Haskell was driving south when she traveled into the northbound lane and collided with Spicher's vehicle.
Police said all the occupants were wearing seat belts or fastened in booster seats.
Haskell's vehicle sustained severe damage to its rear passenger side, while Spicher's vehicle sustained moderate front-end damage.
An investigation is continuing.
