SUNBURY - Myron Turlis became Kulpmont's first Democratic mayor in 12 years by virtue of his uncontested victory in Tuesday's general election.
Turlis, who captured a total of 404 votes, will succeed Robert Slaby, the only Republican in borough history to hold the office for three consecutive terms. Slaby did not seek re-election.
Turlis, an incumbent councilman who won a three-person race for the mayoral nomination in the primary, was the lone candidate on Tuesday's ballot.
Current council President Joseph Winhofer - who, along with Bernie Novakoski, lost to Turlis - won a write-in vote on the Republican ticket in May, but declined the nomination. Winhofer, a Democrat, tallied the most votes for councilman in Tuesday's election with 353.
Other winners for council seats were Democratic incumbents James K. Wisloski, 336 votes; Clarence Deitrick, 333, and Bruno Varano, 331. Political newcomer Anabel I. Hertzog, an Independent, tallied 144 votes.
Democrat Linda M. Nolter was elected tax collector with 417 votes.
The vote totals are unofficial.
