The Moving Wall: Cpl. James Robert Dunkle

Dunkle, a son of Robert and Ruth Dunkle, was born in Sunbury. He graduated from Milton High School in 1966. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and basketball.
He entered the U.S.
Army June 20, 1968. He completed basic training and advanced training as a radio operator prior to reporting to Vietnam in January 1969.
On May 12, 1969, Dunkle earned a Bronze Star for heroism for moving into an exposed position to relay information for aerial rockets and artillery fire on the advancing enemy. He was killed while being evacuated.
Dunkle was also awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Sharpshooter Badge with auto rifle and machine gun bars, Vietnamese Gallantry Cross with palm and Vietnamese Merit Medal.
Dunkle, who died at age 21, was survived by his mother, his father, a brother and two sisters. He is remembered on Panel 25W, Line 98.
