SUNBURY - Swearing-in ceremonies are scheduled this morning for Northumberland County government, which has had little to celebrate throughout 2009, and particularly in recent weeks.
The new year dawns with two lawsuits having been filed in the final two weeks of 2009, as tensions from a year of budget cuts, firings and unanswered questions spill over.
Still, today will be one of formality and ceremony, not
only at the courthouse, but in municipal governments throughout the county.
At 11 a.m. in Courtroom No. 1., newly elected officeholders will be sworn into office. They include incumbent Controller Chuck Erdman, Coroner James F. Kelley, Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts M. Kathleen Wolfe-Strausser, Reigster and Recorder Mary Zimmerman and Jury Commissioner George A. "Norge" Dorko.
Today also marks the return to county government for former three-term county commissioner Sam Deitrick, who joins Dorko as a jury commissioner. Deitrick, who served as a commissioner for 12 years (1992 to 1995 and 2000 to 2007), lost in the 2007 general election in what many considered an upset. He said shortly after the loss that he wouldn't rule out some day running for office again.
Elsewhere, Shamokin city officials will conduct a swearing-in ceremony at 11 a.m. today, where Councilman George Rozinskie will become the city's new mayor. Another highlight event will be in Mount Carmel, where newly appointed Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones will oversee the oath of office for his brother, J. Kevin Jones, who in November was re-elected mayor of Mount Carmel for a fourth term.
