Statue, key stolen from Mount Carmel church
MOUNT CARMEL - Borough police are investigating the theft of a statue and other items over the weekend from Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church of the East.
Bishop Ramzi Musallam reported someone stole several religious statues including the $3,500 statue of Our Lady of Fatima and Infant of Prague, which was donated to the two-year-old church by the pastor's mother before she died.
The church also is missing the key to its tabernacle, a copier and laptop, and clothing and toys from its thrift store.
Musallam told police he discovered the theft Sunday when he entered the sanctuary to pray before preparing for Mass in the afternoon.
No windows were broken and there were no signs of forced entry, which makes Musallam believe the thefts could have been committed by someone with a key to the church or former members of the congregation.
Approximately 50 people attend services at the church at the corner of East Avenue and Hickory Street.
Musallam urged the thieves to return the items to the church.
