Southern negotiators to meet with teachers
CATAWISSA RR - Southern Columbia Area's negotiation team will meet with members of the teachers union Thursday to continue negotiations of their new contract.
Vice President Charlie Porter, who also chairs the negotiations and personnel committee, told the school board Monday night that wage increases and health care costs are standing in the way of a settlement.
District teachers have been working under a three-year contract that expired June 30.
The negotiation team is expecting to hear the union's response to the district's latest proposal, he said.
In November, the school board members blamed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for an anticipated 12 to 15 percent increase to health insurance costs for teachers.
Teachers currently pay a $100 deductible for emergency room visits only, but the district is proposing a new deductible amount that will be revealed to teachers in November.
If the teachers union doesn't accept the proposal, the district is severely limited at the negotiation table, Porter said in November.
Superintendent Paul Caputo complimented the state and local road crews and the district's transportation team for plowing snow out of the roads and district property.
School was canceled Thursday and it might have been canceled again Friday if not for everyone's work to clear the roads, Caputo said.
"Everyone did a tremendous job," he said.
Caputo also mentioned the district was in talks with state Sen. John R. Gordner (R-27) and state Rep. Kurt Masser (R-107) for a roundtable discussion with administrators about the state budget.
Thus far, no proposed dates have worked for all parties involved.
In other business, the school board agreed:
- To revise the salary of Kim Chaundy for the position of head varsity girls basketball coach from $4,500 to $3,000 and the salary of David Fegley for the position of assistant varsity girls basketball coach from $1,800 to $1,500 for the 2013-14 school year.
- To change both David Townsend and Kathryn Fox from volunteer assistant girls basketball coaches to assistant basketball coaches at an annual salary of $900 each for the 2013-14 school year.
