Editor's note: Third in a occasional series.
CATAWISSA RR - The cast and crew of Southern Columbia Area High School's production of "Once On This Island" are ready to entertain and amaze audiences this weekend.
Final dress rehearsals are under way this week for the performances Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. in the school's auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens.
"Once on this Island" is the original and theatrical adaptation of the fairy tale "The Little Mermaid." The musical opened on Broadway Oct. 18, 1990, and received eight Tony Award nominations that included Best Musical, Books and Score. It is a show of non-stop singing and dancing performed in a Caribbean style with a score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. The duo is also known for their scores in "Ragtime," "Anastasia" and "Nightmare Before Christmas."
The show begins on an island where there is a terrible storm. The children in the village are frightened by the rain and the loud claps of thunder. To take
their minds off the storm, the peasants begin to tell the fairy tale story of Ti Moune, a peasant
girl who was rescued from a similar storm by four Gods: Agwe (God of Water), Asaka (Mother Earth), Erzulie (Goddess of Love), and Papa Ge (God of Death).
The musical is under the direction of Letha Stone. Choreographer is Nina Winter. Pit director is Joel Thomas. Lighting and sound adviser is Adrian Brandau.
Stone thanks the students who are members of the cast and crew for their musical ability and talent that they have achieved from their long hours and dedication.
