Shamokin parade to honor sports legends
SHAMOKIN - Local sports legends will be honored during this summer's Grand Parade for Shamokin's 150th aAnniversary, members of the Fifth Ward Parade Committee announced.
Tony Tentromono of the city's Fifth Ward will head a parade division dedicated solely to locals with major sports accomplishments who never received proper recognition.
Recent contact with officials of the Bernie Romanoski Sports Hall of Fame was met with enthusiasm, anticipation and support for event planning.
Tentromono stressed to parade committee members that the area has coaches, organizers and volunteers from various sports on all levels worthy of recognition for their dedication to the youth of the Shamokin area, past and present.
Efforts are under way to contact former state champions, Eastern Conference champions, CYO teams and coaching legends.
Community support and involvement is greatly needed, especially to supply vehicles and build floats.
Anyone who has a recommendation of someone who should be honored or is willing to help build or decorate a float should call Tentromono at 570-217-7324.
The parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 5. It will begin on South Shamokin Street and wind 2.4 miles through the city, ending at Rock and Independence streets.
