SHAMOKIN - Bids were opened Wednesday afternoon to encapsulate asbestos found exposed by water damage in Shamokin-Coal Township Public Library.

The asbestos was exposed by water after a blocked utility sink overflowed, causing heavy damage to the building in March 2009. The asbestos and the ceiling in which it was found will be sealed.

Solicitor Robert Mattis opened and presented to the council two bids.

The first bid came from Sergeant Enterprises Inc., of Jim Thorpe, at a price of $1,038 for "encapsulation of approximately 500 square feet of asbestos" found in the ceiling.

The second bid came from B&V Environmental Services Inc., of Coal Township, at a price of $3,273 for all necessary labor, materials, equipment, testing, insurance and notification.

Although only two bids were available, B&V did not provide a bid bond.

Councilman Councilmen William Strausser and Mayor George Rozinskie made and seconded the motion to accept the bids and review them. The motion passed 3-0. Councilmen R. Craig Rhoades and Michael Snyder were unable to attend the 4:15 p.m. meeting.

Council will vote to accept an offer at a meeting tonight.
