FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - Daniel A. Colón, president and chief executive officer of Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountain Springs (SCMCFS), has been appointed president and chief executive officer of Saint Catherine Regional Hospital in Charlestown, Ind., according to Robert M. Lane, chairman of Saint Catherine Healthcare, LLC.

The new position will not change Colón's status at the local medical center, where he started in July 2009. He will continue to work out of Ashland for the most part and live here.

At Indiana, Colón replaces David Frum, who has resigned his position, on April 26.

Colón will provide leadership and direction for the overall operation of the hospital. He will plan, direct and coordinate the development of short and long range objectives, as well as assume responsibility for achieving the organization's goals.

"I am humbled and honored by the confidence Mr. Lane has placed in my leadership. I look forward to working with the employees and medical staff at Saint Catherine Regional Hospital to provide quality care for the patients served by the facility," said Colón.

"We are pleased with Dan's acceptance of the position as president and chief executive officer of Saint Catherine Regional Hospital. During his tenure at SCMCFS, he has worked with the leadership team and medical staff to improve services at the hospital. We feel our Indiana facility will benefit similarly from his leadership style and vision," said Lane.

Colón learned within the past month about the transition at Saint Catherine's in Indiana.

"It was about two or three weeks ago when the decision was made since we had to plan a transition," said Colón. "I'll be overseeing both hospitals and I'll be putting in an executive there (Charleston) who will be taking over the operation. That person will be reporting to me. It's part of the initiative to get that other organization aligned. We're starting to turn the page here (Fountain Springs). We're starting to go really great. The quality is very high. If you go to a government Web site you can see that our quality is high compared to some of our competition."

He added Saint Catherine Physician Services has added an office in Shenandoah in the former office of Dr. Anthony Seracini at 25 N. Main St.

"We have Dr. (Ayesha) Wahab and Dr. (Greg) Dobash providing services in Shenandoah after taking over Dr. Seracini's practice," said Colón. "Both will be providing extended hours so the community has access to physician care. It's exciting. There are a lot of good things going on here."

With regard to the Charleston facility, Colón said, "In terms of Indiana, what we want to do is tap into a lot of the positive changes that we've had here so we can focus on improving quality in that hospital even more so, that we continue recruiting physicians and that we continue making the operation even more financially viable than what it is."

Colón is pleased that he will continue to live and work in the area.

"I like it here. I think it's beautiful," said Colón. "The people are really great."

Colón has more than 15 years of progressive hospital leadership experience, including serving as administrator/CEO of Claiborne County Hospital & Nursing Home in Tazewell, Tenn., operated by Catholic Health Partners prior to his appointment at SCMCFS. He also has served as administrator for Redbud Community Hospital in Clearlake, Ca.; chief operating officer of Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill, Mass.; and vice president of operations of Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, Oh.

Colón received his master's degree in Hospital Administration from the Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, Ca., and earned a master's in Business Administration degree in Health Administration from the University of Colorado in Denver. He received his bachelor of science degree from Antillean Adventist University in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

Saint Catherine Regional Hospital is a 96-bed community hospital located in Charlestown, Ind., licensed by the Indiana Department of Health and accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

Saint Catherine Regional Hospital and Saint Catherine Medical Center Fountains Springs are operated by Saint Catherine Healthcare, LLC.
