COAL TOWNSHIP - The top five students in the Class of 2014 for Shamokin Area High School have been announced by Principal Chris Venna.

The valedictorian is Melissa Smallets and the salutatorian is Joseph Colangelo, followed by Kaitlyn Shultz, third; Olivia Bonshock, fourth, and Brianna Bonshock, fifth.


Smallets is a daughter of Sue Smallets, of 30 S. Third St., Shamokin, and the late Robert Smallets. She was secretary of the National Honor Society, vice president of SATV, and was a member of student council, Science Olympiad, yearbook, dual enrollment, The Works Club, Students Against Bullying Club, prom committee, band, orchestra, chemistry club and powder puff football. She was also a stage crew technician. She will attend West Chester University to major in nursing.


Colangelo is a son of Victor and Karen Colangelo, of 945 W. Spruce St., Coal Township. He was captain of the varsity swim team, played on the varsity soccer team, and was a member of varsity club, 700 Club (SAT), student council, National Honor Society, math club, The Works Club and dual enrollment. He will attend Bucknell University to major in mechanical engineering.


Shultz is a daughter of James and Debra Shultz, of 621 W. Mulberry St., Shamokin. She was a member of the varsity soccer team and participated in band, stage crew, Students Against Bullying Club, Key Club, National Honor Society, Helping Hands and American sign language club (TIES Program), math club and dual enrollment. She will attend Shippensburg University to major in mathematics with a concentration in statistics.


Olivia Bonshock is a daughter of Kevin and Sherri Bonshock, of 578 Old Reading Road, Sunbury. She was captain of the varsity softball, basketball and volleyball teams, and was a member of National Honor Society, prom committee, student council, varsity club, Students Against Bullying Club, Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Conference, dual enrollment and powder puff football. She will attend Bloomsburg University to major in nursing.


Brianna Bonshock is a daughter of Greg and Claire Bonshock, of 116 Locust Road, Paxinos. She was a captain of the varsity softball team and a member of the varsity volleyball team. She also participated in varsity club, National Honor Society, dual enrollment, Students Against Bullying Club, powder puff football, prom committee, yearbook, of which she was editor, and student council, of which she was secretary. She was senior class secretary. She will be attend Penn State University and has not yet declared a major.

141 seniors

There are 141 seniors in the 2014 graduating class. Class officers who will speak at today's commencement are Daniel Delbaugh, president, Helana Supsic, vice president, Brianna Bonshock, secretary, and Natalie Wolfe, treasurer. Smallets will give the valedictory address, and Colangelo, as salutatorian, will give the welcoming address. The program includes presentation of graduates by Venna and recognition of graduates by James Zack, superintendent.

Class motto is "Chase your dreams, but always know the road that leads you home again" from Tim McGraw. Class song is Nickelback's "Photograph." Class colors are maroon, grey and silver, and the class flower is the sunflower.
