Pershing W. Markle Jr., a 1987 graduate of Berwick High School, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in a ceremony at Fort Indiantown Gap, his current duty station.

Markle is the battalion commander of 1-111th Infantry, headquartered in Plymouth Meeting, and served in the Pennsylvania National Guard for more than 26 years.

He is a graduate of Penn State and Bloomsburg universities.

Markle taught high school science from 1995 to 2008 at Danville Area High School.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Pershing Markle Sr., of Berwick, and a grandson of Berry Markle and her late husband, Persing Markle, and the late Audrey and Walter Lubold, who lived in Mount Carmel.

Markle lives in Lebanon with his wife, Christina.
