Police: Shamokin driver swerved to miss dog, hit tree
EXCELSIOR - A Shamokin man crashed his truck into a tree Thursday night along Route 901 in Mount Carmel Township.
Charles R. Britton, 48, of 104 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, was driving a Dodge Dakota on Route 901 on his way home from work at International Paper about 11:10 p.m. when a dog darted in front of his pickup truck, police said.
While steering to the right to avoid the animal, the driver lost control and the pickup went over a small embankment and struck a tree head-on.
Because of the position of the truck, Britton couldn't free himself and had to be assisted by emergency personnel. He was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
The crash occurred between Excelsior and the intersection of Route 54 at the former Boylan's garage.
The accident is under investigation by Mount Carmel Township Police.
