Police investigate inmate death at Frackville prison
FRACKVILLE - State police at Frackville are currently investigating the death of an inmate at the state correctional institution in that municipality.
SCI Frackville Superintendent Robert Collins reported Monday that at 12:45 p.m. Friday, corrections officers found inmate Frank Bonita Jr., 52, unconscious in the cell. The officers provided immediate emergency first aid until facility medical personnel arrived.
Bonita was transferred to St. Catherine's Medical Center in Fountain Springs by ambulance, and he was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. by a hospital physician.
The official cause of death will be determined by the Schuylkill County Coroner's Office.
Bonita was served a one-year, five months to six year sentence for receiving stolen property on a Lackawanna County conviction, effective Oct. 28, 2009. He had been in SCI Frackville since Jan. 26, 2011 after being returned as a parole violator.
Facility staff have notified the inmate's next of kin.
