Fire in Aristes
ARISTES - Area firefighters responded to the home of Anne Anoia, 332 Main St., for a furnace malfunction at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
According to Aristes Fire Company Capt. Greg Yeager, a neighbor reported black smoke coming from the chimney area. The neighbor pounded on the front door, but had no response, Yeager added.
Anoia's daughter, Francine, was the only person home at the time. She was uninjured.
Yeager said there was no damage to the building and that the furnace will be off until it can be inspected.
NORTH MANHEIM TOWNSHIP - Jason Skripko, 28, of Pottsville, suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle accident along the Gordon Nagle Trail in this Schuylkill County township.
State police at Schuylkill Haven reported Regina E. Schaeffer, 86, of Donaldson, who was operating a 2007 Chevy Malibu at 4:30 p.m., pulled out from a parking lot at Trail Gardens and attempted to make a left turn onto the Gordon Nagle Trail (Route 901) when she observed Skripko, who was traveling west on Gordon Nagle Trail on a 2008 Harley-Davidson Sportster. Police said Schaeffer believed she would be able to enter the highway safely to travel east and pulled out in front of Skripko, causing him to apply his brakes.
Police said Skripko lost control of his cycle, which fell onto the right side and traveled approximately 26 feet before leaving the paved portion of the road. Skripko and his passenger, Heather I. Flannery, 27, of Pottsville, were ejected from the motorcycle and traveled approximately 46 feet before coming to rest on the ground.
The motorcycle traveled another 12 feet before its rear end struck a large rock on the east shoulder of the road.
Skripko suffered a head injury and was flown by Life Flight helicopter to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. He was initially listed in serious condition before being discharged Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Flannery, who also suffered injuries, was taken by ambulance to Geisinger.
Police reported charges will be filed against both drivers.
