Online threat interrupts LCCC classes college-wide
Luzerne County Community College closed at 9:30 a.m. Thursday after a threat was received via a computer communication.
The closing affected the main campus in Nanticoke and all off-campus sites, including sites in Shamokin and Kulpmont.
All staff and students were asked to vacate the facilities immediately.
The college said its security department has contacted all appropriate authorities including local, county, state and the FBI.
Law enforcement was at the Nanticoke campus conducting an investigation.
The college said all further information would be released by Nanticoke police.
Locally, LCCC campuses in Shamokin and Kulpmont were closed in the morning as a precautionary measure. LCCC conducts classes on the fourth floor of the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center on East Arch Street, Shamokin, and operates a nursing program on the top floor at Roosevelt Courts owned by Northumberland County Housing Authority in Kulpmont. All other entities that operate in those respective buildings remained open throughout the day.
Northumberland County officials were notified about the threat, but decided to keep the buildings open after being informed it only pertained to the LCCC main campus.
