SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - One person was transported for treatment following a head-on collision early Saturday morning on Route 61 near Crocus Road and a local restaurant.

Mary E. Tharp, 40, of Sunbury, was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville after having to be extricated from her 2003 Ford Escape following the 4:39 a.m. accident. She was later treated and released from the medical center.

State police at Stonington report a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Robert D. Fisher, 22, of Shamokin, was traveling south on Route 61 while Tharp was traveling north in the Escape. Police say Fisher then entered the north lane and was struck head on by the Escape.

After the impact, both vehicles rotated in a counterclockwise direction with both coming to rest on the north side of the roadway.

Reports from the scene say that Geisinger's Life Flight helicopter was on standby, but not called in for transport. Fisher was not injured in the crash but was transported to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital for evaluation.

State police said Fisher will be cited for the crash.

Assisting police at the scene were Elysburg and Stonington Fire crews, Elysburg Ambulance and AREA Services.
