Developmental screenings offered
CATAWISSA RR - Appointments are being scheduled for free developmental screenings for 3- and 4-year-old children from Southern Columbia Area School District.
The screenings will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Oct. 23 at G.C. Hartman Elementary Center. Hearing, speech, vision, gross and fine motor skills, personal and social skills, adaptive behavior, cognitive skills and height and weight will be covered.

Pre-registration open for parade
SHAMOKIN - Pre-registration is open for the Shamokin Halloween Parade set for Oct. 23.
Registration forms are available at First National Bank, 10 S. Market St., and The News-Item, 707 N. Rock St. The bank and newspaper are co-sponsoring the event with AREA Services. Call 570-648-9500 for more information.
The parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Registration and parade formation begins at 5:30 p.m. at Claude E. Kehler Community Park, Arch and Third streets. Judges will be on-hand at the registration area.
SASB meeting rescheduled to Oct. 22
COAL TOWNSHIP - This month's meeting of Shamokin Area School Board has been moved to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in the board conference room of the middle/high school.
Hike set for Oct. 15
BARNESVILLE - Join the naturalist from Tuscarora State Park for a hike of the Roaring Creek Watershed beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The hike is eight miles in length and moderate in difficulty, and the loop passes by two large reservoirs. Participants will meet at the Roaring Creek parking lot located on Route 42 below Aristes. This is a dog-friendly hike, but all pets must be leashed and get along with other pets and people, and will be cancelled in case of inclement weather.
