Kulpmont Borough announcements
KULPMONT - The borough street sweeper season will begin March 28 and run through September. Also, cardboard and newspaper recycle bins will be open for dropoffs beginning today . Cardboard and newspapers will be accepted from 8 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month.
The borough will be holding a food surplus distribution Thursday at the borough garage from 8 a.m. and noon. Residents enrolled in the program are reminded to bring their bags.
Progress reports distributed
COAL TOWNSHIP - The Shamokin Area Middle/High School will be distributing progress reports to students on Friday. All students in grades seven through 12 will receive a progress report to update parents.
Shamokin Area Pre-K registration
COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin Area School District is taking appointments to be held March 26 and 27 for the pre-K program.
Parents are asked to call the elementary school office at 648-5721, extension 2900, to make an appointment.
Children must be four years of age by the first day of school, which is tentatively scheduled for Monday, Aug. 26, to qualify.
Author to discuss Vietnam War
LEWISBURG - Historian Fredrik Logevall will give the talk, "Embers of War: Vietnam Reconsidered," at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in the Gallery Theatre (Room 301) of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell University.
The discussion will encompass Logevall's latest book, "Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America's Vietnam," named one of the best books of 2012 by The Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and Globe and Mail.
Logevall is the John S. Knight Professor of International Studies and Professor of History at Cornell, where he serves as director of the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies. In 2007-08 he was Mellon Senior Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge and Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Nottingham.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
