Woolly worm festival planned
LEWISBURG - The 17th annual Woolly Worm Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12, at Hufnagle Park.
The events starts at 9:30 a.m. with music from the hometown Green Dragon marching band and concludes with the winter weather prognostication at 4 p.m. when a team of "worm readers" measure, weigh and analyze the furry creatures in an attempt to predict the upcoming winter.
Organizers say the woolly worms are to winter as Punxsutawney Phil is to spring.
There will be food, woolly worm races, crafts, games, live music, face painters, a magic show, a petting zoo and pony rides.
The Kiwanis Club of Buffalo Valley AM, Lewisburg, sponsors the event. Proceeds benefit charities supported by the club.
Bird walk scheduled
BARNESVILLE - Conservation volunteer David Kruel will lead a bird walk at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at State Game Land 227 on Tuscarora Park Road across from the Weiser Forest District building near Tuscarora State Park.
Kruel will offer helpful information about how to identify the local and migratory songbirds by sight, song, habitat and behavior.
The walk is sponsored by the Schuylkill Conservancy.
Those attending are encouraged to bring along binoculars. The walk is not a pet-friendly walk and will be postponed in case of inclement weather.
