Softball tourney to benefit wounded

MOUNT CARMEL - A charity softball tournament benefitting Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc. will be held Aug. 15 at the Midway baseball field at the north end of the borough.

There are seven teams registered, all made up of employees or active volunteers for an emergency services organization.

The event is organized by the Mount Carmel Township Police Department in cooperation with local emergency services organizations. The public's support is sought through attendance at the games and by making donations to the cause. National Night Out set Aug. 5

ATLAS - The annual National Night Out event in Mount Carmel Township will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the township complex, Laurel and Forest streets.

Residents are asked to turn on porch lights, lock their doors and spend an evening at the complex, where contests, demonstrations and youth activities will be held. Food and beverages will be available. Members of the Northumberland County Sheriff's Department, state police and Pennsylvania Army National Guard will be there, too.

The crime and drug prevention event is the sixth held in the township, and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and locally by Mount Carmel Township police, fire departments and EMS, along with businesses.
