Billboard unveiling today

SHAMOKIN - Vision for Growth (V4G) will unveil its 8-by-20-foot billboard mural saluting the region's coal-mining heritage in a ceremony at 10 a.m. today.

The billboard was constructed at the north end of the washhouse at the former Glen Burn Colliery property along Route 61 just south of the Cameron Bridge.

The colorful scene reminiscent of mining's heyday will tell travelers they are entering "The Gateway to the Coal Region."

Shamokin Area in session this week

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin Area School District Superintendent James Zack reported that, contrary to rumors circulating in the area, school will be in session for students Monday and Tuesday.

In keeping with its schedule, Tuesday will be a Act 80 day early dismissal for Shamokin Area students. The elementary school will dismiss at 12:45 p.m. and the middle/high school at 12:18 p.m. K-4 p.m. students will have classes.

Shamokin Area schools will be closed for Thanksgiving vacation from Wednesday through Dec. 2. Classes will resume Dec. 3.
