Old appliances picked up

DALMATIA - The first refrigerator will be picked up through PPL Electric Utilities' new refrigerator and freezer recycling program at the home of Dalmatia resident Mary Anne Smeltz.

Like thousands of other PPL Electric Utilities' customers, Smeltz kept an older refrigerator in her basement. But she realized the old energy hog was costing her $150 a year to run to store a few drinks and some frozen foods.

Beginning today, PPL Electric Utilities customers can schedule a free pick-up of their old, working fridge, freezer or room air conditioner by calling toll-free 1-877-270-3522 or visiting www.pplelectric.com/recycle. They will receive a $35 rebate and save up to $150 on their annual electric costs.

The PPL Electric Utilities Refrigerator and Freezer Recycling Program:

- Gives customers $35 for participating.

- Saves customers up to $150 in energy costs annually.

- Recycles 95 percent of the materials in old, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers.

- Provides free removal of the old appliances

This PPL Electric Utilities program saves money, energy and the environment. Research has shown that most second refrigerators were built before the current energy efficiency standards and use as much as three times the energy of newer models. Consequently, these appliances consume significant amounts of energy for what, in many cases, is very limited use in homes today. Removing an old refrigerator can save up to $150 annually for the customer. The avoided carbon dioxide emissions from the recycling of each refrigerator has about the same impact as taking two cars off the road for an entire year.

JACO Environmental has contracts with more than 60 utilities in 27 states and the company operates 17 recycling centers. JACO was awarded the Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 and a Best of the Best Award in 2007 by the EPA on the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol.
