Historical society to host picnic

ASHLAND - The Ashland Area Historic Preservation Society will host "Picnic in the Backyard" at 6 p.m. Wednesday at its headquarters, 316-318 Centre St. Everyone is welcome. Bring a covered dish to share.

AARP offers driver course

FOUNTAIN SPRINGS - The American Association for Retired Persons (AARP) will conduct a driver safety course on July 28 and July 30 at Saint Catherine Medical Center. The two-day course will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Susan G. Amedow Boardroom, and is open to all drivers ages 50 and older. Instruction will be provided by James Minnich. Participants will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road, as well as how to adjust their driving to accommodate age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Participants completing the program may be eligible for discounts on their auto insurance. If a husband and wife are both drivers, both must attend the class to be eligible for potential discounts. Class size is limited. Class material costs $12 for AARP members, with proof of membership, or $14 for non-AARP members. Pay with a check made out to AARP at the start of the class. Contact Deb Hubler at 875-5928 to enroll. Enrollment is open to the public.
