SAHS band to present concert

COAL TOWNSHIP - The Shamokin Area High School Symphonic Band will present its annual spring concert, "Rhythms of Spring," at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 in the Shamokin Area High School Auditorium.

The concert, under the direction of Kevin B. Styer, is being held in March in conjunction with the Music Educators National Conference's observance of Music in Our Schools Month.

The band will perform "An American Fanfare," "English Folk Song Suite," "The Legend of Danny Boy," "Children's March," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "Disney at the Movies," "Festive Dance" from Faust and "Circus Days March."

In May, the symphonic band will travel to Atlanta to perform at the Music Showcase Festivaland visit Six Flags over Georgia Amusement Park and Stone Mountain Park.

Tuesday's concert is free to the public.

Motorcycle safety classes offered

The Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program (PAMSP) is offering free motorcycle safety classes for state residents. Class schedules are available online at www.pamsp.com.

Students who successfully complete the knowledge and the skills test through the PAMSP will receive a motorcycle license from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

A motorcycle permit is required in order to register for a class. Participants must visit a PennDOT Driver License Center to obtain a motorcycle learner's permit before registering for a class.

The Basic Rider Course is designed for novice riders who want to learn basic skills to operate a motorcycle safely. Motorcycles and helmets are provided. The Experienced Rider Course is available for experienced riders who want to improve their skills and increase safety. Students use their own motorcycles. Successful students can obtain their motorcycle licenses through either of the two programs offered.

Tree biology and pruning workshop

MCEWENSVILLE - A tree biology and pruning workshop will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Montgomery House Library, 20 Church St.

Lee Murphy, Northumberland County master gardener and certified arborist, will be featured speaker. The program will also include an overview of tree identification, selection, installation and diagnosing plant disorders. There is no cost.

Pre-register by calling the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office at 988-3950 Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is preferred but not mandatory. Workshops are handicapped accessible. The program is sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension in Northumberland County and Northumberland County master gardeners.
