SHAMOKIN - The city will not charge people for fire services.

So said former City of Shamokin Fire Bureau Chief and current city council member William Milbrand at Monday's meeting.

It was reported recently in The News-Item that during a work session held Feb. 1 the city considered the idea of levying a fee for fire personnel labor. That wasn't entirely correct, Milbrand said.

The billing would be sent to a person's insurance, Milbrand said. If there's any money earmarked for fire coverage, then the city would get paid.

"If not, we get nothing," Milbrand said. "I don't want people to think it's coming out of their pocket."

Besides, he noted, no decision has been made on the idea.

"That's just something in the works," Milbrand said. "We're kicking that around. We're going to do more research."

Solicitor H. Robert Mattis said he'd looked up ordinances from three other cities that have similar arrangements.

The street crews have been keeping up with the weather, according to council member Michael R. Snyder.

"The weather's not cooperating," Snyder joked, adding the council should "hope for an early spring."

The council appointed Robert Wolfe to a five-year term on the city Housing Authority, effective Feb. 8, 2010, to January of 2015.

Joseph Wightman was appointed to a four-year term on the city Civil Service Board, effective Jan. 4, 2010, to the first Monday of January 2014.

William Grow was appointed to a three-year term on the Civil Service Board, effective Jan. 4, 2010, to the first Monday of January 2013.

Michael Bradley was appointed to a two year term on the Civil Service Board, effective Jan. 4, 2010, to the first Monday of January 2012.
