COAL TOWNSHIP - A retired principal in the public school system will be the next high school principal at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School.
David Becker, of Bloomsburg, who has many years of experience as an elementary, middle-school and high-school principal, has accepted the post at the Catholic school in Coal Township. He will begin his duties Jan. 19.
Sister Margaret McCullough, who has been serving as the school administrator, elementary and high-school principal since the retirement of high-school Principal John McKay in June 2008, announced Becker's appointment Tuesday. McCullough will remain school administrator and elementary school principal.
The 62-year-old Becker is a native of Frackville who attended St. Joseph Elementary School in Frackville. He is a member of St. Columba Church in Bloomsburg and previously served on the education committee at St. Columba, where he was co-chairman of the Middle States evaluation committee.
Becker's 35-year career in education has been spent in the public school system. He is certified as an elementary, middle-school and high-school principal, and is currently filling in as an elementary principal in Palmerton Area School District.
In addition to serving as an elementary principal at Palmerton, Becker was a reading teacher for 20 years and served as a football and baseball coach in the same district. He was a high-school and middle-school principal at Montgomery Area School District and middle-school principal in Southern Columbia Area School District.
"I believe I have special abilities and talents that are needed to serve as high-school principal at Lourdes," Becker said. "I love being with kids, teachers and staff in a school environment. Education has been a vital part of my life, and my goal at Lourdes will be to make school a place where young people are accepted, cared about and really looked after. I want to make the school a place where students love to be."
Becker's wife, Nancy, is employed with the 21st Century Program through the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) and formerly was a supervisor in Mifflinburg Area School District.
They have two children, Ethan and Gretchen.
McCullough said, "We're looking forward to having Mr. Becker serve as our next principal. He brings a wealth of educational and administrative experience to the position. His knowledge of the high school curriculum will be very important and he has a deep commitment to education. Mr. Becker knows what the high school principal job entails and we're very happy to have him join the Lourdes family."
A welcoming program for Becker will be held at the school from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17.
