New dairy princess crowned during SUN Dairy Days
SELINSGROVE - The SUN Area dairy promotion committee held the annual SUN Area Ag Dairy Days May 16 to 18 at the Middlecreek Valley Antique Association Spring Show.
The weekend started with a celebrity cow milking contest and cheese tasting. The overall winner of the celebrity cow milking contest was Ralph Miller, president of the Central Pennsylvania Vintage Iron Club. On Saturday the new SUN Area Dairy Promotion team was introduced. The weekend ended with free ice cream sundaes.
The 2013-14 SUN Area Dairy Princess, Ashley Wetzel, crowned the new 2014-15 SUN Area Dairy Princess, Lacey Smith. Lacey, 19, is a daughter of Allen and Tammy Smith, of Mifflinburg. She is a 2012 graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School. She was active in Future Farmers of America. Lacey does not live on a dairy farm but has family who are dairy farmers and is also active in showing livestock at the Union County West End Fair. Lacey was the 2012 Miss Union County West End Fair Queen. Lacey enjoys reading, writing and baking. She also works at Texas Roadhouse, Selinsgrove.
The 2014-15 SUN Area Dairy Maid is Abbigail Doak. Abbigail, 13, is a daughter of Samuel IV and Julie Doak, of Beavertown. Her family operates Redview Farm where they milk 25 cows. She is very active in Snyder County 4-H. She will be a seventh-grade student at the School Connections Academy. She is also the proud owner of 16 dairy animals.
The 2014-15 SUN Area Dairy Misses are Tabitha Hauck and Paige Rhyne.
Tabitha, 11, is a daughter of Ronnie Jr. and Larissa Hauck, of Winfield. She will be a seventh-grade student at Selinsgrove Area Middle School. Tabitha owns three registered Holstein heifers and lives on her grandparent's dairy farm where they raise dairy heifers. She enjoys pulling her garden tractor.
Paige, 11, is a daughter of Darren and Tammy Rhyne, of Mifflinburg. She will be a fifth-grade student at Mifflinburg Area Intermediate School. She owns two dairy cows and many goats. She is active in Union County 4-H and Girl Scouts.
The 2013-14 SUN Area dairy promotion team completed 211 school promotions, 90 media, 49 booth, 40 non-dairy meetings, eight dairy meetings, 26 special events and four state events and traveled 8,202 miles.
