MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Volunteer Emergency Services Association, Inc. (MCVESA) has begun its annual fund drive for 2009. This organization was created to help raise the necessary funds to replace the Mount Carmel Volunteer Fire Department's apparatus.

Last week, borough residents should have received the fund drive information in the mail. There is no door-to-door or phone soliciting done with this fund raiser.

As noted in the pamphlet, additional payments will be made on the loans for the Anthracite Steam Fire Engine Company's 2003 KME 1500 GPM engine and the West End Fire Company's 1984 Pierce Arrow 1250 GPM engine. Once these are paid off, MCVESA will then assist the American Hose and Chemical Fire Company with payments on a new American LaFrance engine that is in the process of being manufactured. This acquisition was greatly aided by an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the federal government. However, this delivery has been delayed somewhat by the bankruptcy proceedings of the American LaFrance company.

A newer ladder truck will also be delivered to the Anthracite Steam Fire Company. The purchase of this piece of equipment, which is crucial in fighting fires in row homes and multiple-story dwellings, was also assisted with the awarding of an additional AFG grant.

The Anthracite Steam Fire Company's ladder is not only a great asset for the borough, it has been used to fight fires in Ashland, Wilburton, Marion Heights, Kulpmont, Coal Township, Shamokin and Mount Carmel Township.

MCVESA's utmost concern is the safety of the volunteer firefighters when they respond to and operate at any emergency scene. They serve the borough with pride and tradition and strive to maintain their equipment to the highest of standards.

Early responses to this year's fund drive indicate borough residents are once again supporting the Mount Carmel Volunteer Fire Department, even in these hard economic times. Any donation will help in reaching our goal of keeping fire equipment updated and operating at peak performance. Those who wish to contribute should send in their check, money order or cash in the envelope provided to MCVESA/Mount Carmel Fire Truck Fund, P.O. Box 144, Mount Carmel 17851-0144.
