MOUNT CARMEL - Plans are under way for the 17th annual Mount Carmel Lions Oak Street Festival, set this year for Saturday, May 10.

The festival continues to grow each year, with last year setting a record for vendors, with 12 turned away for lack of space. With some modifications, organizers hope to create enough space to accommodate anticipated growth this year.

They said the quality of arts and crafts and concessions continues to improve, too.

The festival helps the Lions Club continue vitally important programs such as its Holiday Meals on Wheels, upgrading its hospital mobility equipment and aid for eyeglasses. The club is always hoping to turn back its success to the community.

Restoration of Wightman's Dam along Route 61, just east of Mount Carmel, is among the current projects. The club hopes to create a nature preserve, open to the public.

These things can only happen with community support, so the Lions ask the public to help make the street fair a success and the community a nicer place to live.
