MOUNT CARMEL - The top graduates of Mount Carmel Area High School have been announced. Alyssa Buggy has been named the valedictorian of the class of 2012. Kirsten Sinopoli is salutorian. Ranked third is Taylor Getty, fourth, Cody Shustack, and fifth, Jeremy Schmoyer.

Alyssa Buggy is a daughter of John and Rita Buggy, of Kulpmont. She is the senior class secretary, president of the Interact Club and holds the secretary office for both Spanish and Art Club. She is also a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Peer Mediation, Chemistry Club, Science Club, TV Studio, Stage Crew, participates in the school musical, is president of the National Honor Society and a member of the National Athletic Honor Society, Quill and Scroll, Masque and Gavel.

Alyssa is a three-year letterman in cross country and track and field and is a one year letterman in girls varsity basketball. Alyssa attends Holy Angels Church, Kulpmont, where she is an altar server.

Alyssa plans to attend Saint Joseph's University to major in biology.

Kirsten Sinopoli is a daughter of Robert and Raelene Sinopoli, Denmar Gardens. She was a two-year member of the volleyball team and a four-year member of the track and field team. Kirsten is the vice president of the Interact Club and National Honor Society. She is a member of the TV Studio, Stage Crew, Spanish Club, Art Club, Chemistry Club, Science Club, SADD, Future Teachers of America, National Athletic Honor Society, Masque and Gavel, Quill and Scroll, and participated in powder puff football. She was a yearbook photographer, control room operator for the TV Studio and a captain of the track and field team.

Kirsten plans to attend Bloomsburg University to major in biology.

Taylor Getty is a daughter of Bret and the late Leanne Getty, of Mount Carmel. She is a member of the varsity soccer and swim teams and served as a captain for both. Taylor is a member of Interact Club, FTA, Spanish Club, Science Club, Chemistry Club, Yearbook Committee, Pep Club, Chorus, the spring musical and powder puff football. She has been a distinguished honor roll student throughout high school, and is treasurer of the National Honor Society, National Athletic Honor Society, Quill and Scroll and Masque and Gavel.

Taylor plans to attend West Chester University in the fall to major in biology.

Cody Shustack is a member of the Spanish and chemistry club. He participates in Relay for Life annually, took part in Dance for Hope and assisted with the celebration of special athletes during tenth through twelvth grade. He was a former Elks student of the month and competed and won a group third place award at the Lock Haven math competition along with Getty and Kevin Mekosh. Cody is a member of the 700 club, earning 760 in the math portion of the SATs.

In athletics, Shustack is a four-year letterman in football, an all-star linebacker, a team captain and was the WNEP-16 football scholar athlete of the year. In baseball, he is a three year letterman.

After graduation, Shustack plans to attend Penn State University main campus to major in engineering.

Jeremy Robert Schmoyer is a son of the late Robert Schmoyer and Barbara Schmoyer, of Mount Carmel. Jeremy is a member of the National Honor Society and National Athletic Society. He participates in Chemistry Club, Science Club, SADD, Pep Club, Peer Mediation, Art Club, Spanish Club, Science Olympiad, Stage Crew, Chorus, Dance Club, placed first twice and second in the school's art show, was voted "most studious" by his peers. In sports, he participates in cross country, soccer, swimming and track and field.

In the fall, Schmoyer will attend the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia to major in biochemistry.
