The Mount Carmel Area Board of Education Merit Award winner for November at the high school level is senior student Lisa Darrup, a daughter of Jim and Anne Darrup. of Mount Carmel. Her activities include varsity football cheerleading, yearbook, Odyssey of the Mind, Interact, peer mediation, chemistry club and pep club. Previous awards and honors that she has received are Elks student of the month and distinguished honor roll. Darrup's interests include shopping, scrapbooking, dancing, baking and going to the beach. She was nominated by teacher Trish Stockalis, who said, "Lisa is highly motivated to learn and be successful in life. She is committed to school and her extra-curricular activities. She stands head and shoulders over most, not only in her drive to succeed, her intelligence and creativity, but also her pleasing personality." Darrup plans are to attend college to major in speech-language pathology.

The elementary school board Merit Award winner for November is fifth-grade student Kassandra Troutman, a daughter of Shawn and Pam Davis, of Mount Carmel, and Robert and Tracey Troutman, of Kulpmont. She is a member of the school chorus and enjoys being outdoors and spending time with family and friends. A distinguished honor roll student, her PSSA scores are advanced in both reading and math She was nominated by her homeroom teacher, Dawn Palewicz, and physical education teacher, Amanda Stepenaskie. Teachers said she comes to school every day with a smile and positive attitude, is extremely outgoing and goes above and beyond to help others.
