Memorial service will remember firefighters who died in past year
MOUNT CARMEL - Remembering those who have answered their final alarm during the past year, the Volunteer Fire Department of Mount Carmel will hold its 15th annual memorial service on Sunday, Oct. 6. The service will be held at 9 a.m. at Grace United Church of Christ, Third and Market streets, with the Rev. Joan Brown officiating.
Those to be remembered are: Bruno J. Leonardi and Charles V. Mahalik, American Hose and Chemical Fire Company; Calvin C. Clews and Walter V. Wanzie, Anthracite Steam Fire Company No. 1; John J. Bailoni, Ronald E. Clark, Walter Karycki and Joseph M. Shemansky, Clover Hose Company, and Robert A. Veach, West End Fire Company.
Members of the fire department are asked to be at the church by 8:45 a.m. and to wear their company's uniform. Families and the public are invited.
Established by a borough ordinance in April 1899, the fire department is comprised of the American Hose and Chemical Fire Company, Anthracite Steam Fire Company No. 1, Clover Hose Company, West End Fire Company, Mount Carmel Area Rescue Squad and Mount Carmel Fire Police.
Department officers are: Ricky Schnee (West End), president; Philip Cimino (Clover Hose), vice president; James Williams Sr. (Anthracite), secretary, and Jason Godin (rescue squad), treasurer. James Reed (American Hose) is the borough fire chief, and his assistants are Daniel Cimino (Clover Hose) and John Williams Jr. (Anthracite).
