MCA Merit Award winners honored
MOUNT CARMEL - The January Mount Carmel Area School Board Merit Award winners were announced and recognized at a school board meeting.
The winner at the high school level is junior student Kayla Witt, a daughter of Norm and Leanne Witt, of Kulpmont. Kayla is a color guard captain, a member of the ensemble cast of the school musical, "Legally Blonde," a distinguished honor roll student, a former Elks student of the month and has previously won the junior high pride award. She is a yearbook staff editor and a writer and reporter in news reporting class and chief editor of the school news program, "MCA Live." She has been inducted into the National Honor Society and excels academically.
Kayla was nominated by both yearbook teacher, Trish Stockalis, and news reporting teacher, Diane Rumbel. Stockalis said, "Kayla is committed, energetic and a compassionate individual." She demonstrates leadership skills and maintains a clear sense of purpose, both in and outside of the classroom."
Rumbel added, "Kayla is a talented, responsible and capable young lady who treats her peers with respect and is a great role model for underclassmen. She is well-deserved of this award and has contributed to her classes and the Mount Carmel Area School District."
After graduation, she plans to attend college and pursue a career in communications.
The elementary award winner is kindergarten student Corey Carl, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Carl, of Kulpmont. Corey was nominated by his classroom teacher. Cindy Sinopoli. who said "Corey is meticulous in his work, notices and compliments me and his classmates on everything from how nice work is done to how nice a person looks or acts. He makes other people happy with his kind words and actions."
He plays baseball for the Anthracite Fire Company and practices karate with Black Bear Dojo. Corey enjoys spending time with his family, coloring, playing outside and swimming.
