MC4A presents fifth annual round of scholarships
MOUNT CARMEL - Mount Carmel Area Athletic Alumni Association (MC4A) held its fifth annual membership meeting and scholarship awards drawing Aug. 11 at Mattucci's Willow Café. Attending were members and students who applied for the scholarship awards.
The association is a non-profit organization with the mission of providing scholarships for Mount Carmel Area students who have participated in a sport or supported interscholastic athletic programs while attending Mount Carmel Area High School, and in doing so, also established a bond between graduates and current students.
The scholarship awards drawing was held, in which six scholarships were awarded and two special awards were presented. The awards ceremony was hosted by Dan Ficca and Robert Colahan. The members, applicants and their parents were welcomed, and association officials reported 40 students applied for the awards.
There was a change made to the dollar amount of the awards. If a winning student is a current dues-paying member or if any family member is a current member, the award is increased from $1,500 to $2,000.
The seven $1,500 and one $2,000 scholarship winners included the following college students:
- Debra Fletcher, a daughter of Susan and Michael Fletcher, of Kulpmont. She is a senior majoring in nursing. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, she was on the girls soccer team for four years and was statistician for four years for the junior high boys basketball team.
- Kristen Hepler, a daughter of Mark and Janet Hepler, of Kulpmont. She is a junior at Penn State University majoring in communications. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, she played softball, intramural volleyball and powder puff football, and was a cheerleader.
- Jocelyn Jaworski, a daughter of James and Angela Jaworski, of Atlas. She is a sophomore at Lebanon Valley College majoring in math. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, she was on the cheerleading squad four years and captain her senior year. She was on the pep squad for two years, and played basketball.
- Casey Kane, a daughter of Paul and Lori Kane, of Atlas. She is a sophomore at Bloomsburg University with an undeclared major. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, she participated in volleyball and track and field.
- James Lesko II, a son of James and Corrine Lesko, of Kulpmont. He is a junior at Bloomsburg University majoring in philosophy and economics. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, he participated in freshman football, basketball, baseball and intramural basketball.
- Jordan Politza, a son of Laurie Credito, of Mount Carmel, is a junior at Bloomsburg University majoring in engineering. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, he participated in wrestling, cross country, track and field and freshman football.
- Marcus Wasilewski, a son of Mark Wasileski, of Den Mar Gardens, and the late Lisa Wasilewski. He is a sophomore attending the University of Maine majoring in pre-med/biology. While attending Mount Carmel Area High School. he was an all-state football player and was on the WNEP dream team.
- Jeffrey Woytowich, a son of Michael and Maryanne Woytowich, of Marion Heights, is a senior at Millersville University majoring in technology education. He graduated from Pennsylvania College of Technology with an applied science degree in collision repair. While at Penn College, he was a member of the lacrosse team.While attending Mount Carmel Area High School, he was a four-year member of the wrestling team, achieving many awards, and also participated in golf and track and field. His wrestling awards included quickest pin (25 seconds), most improved, Academy Award, Atlas American Legion Award and coaches award.
The applicants were encouraged to continue to do well in furthering their education and were reminded that they can apply again next year if they continue to meet the qualifications. Before the ceremony, food and refreshments were available to all.
