SHAMOKIN - The Kiwanis Club recently hosted the Rev. Betty Ford, president of Manna for the Many, a charity organization that provides non-perishable food and other goods to needy families in the area.
Manna for the Many was formed out of the Shamokin Area Ministerium, a group of ministers from all faiths who meet each month to help the community.
The charity was established in 2000, and has been supported by local churches, businesses, organizations and individuals. It is run by volunteers from all walks of life giving their time and talents to this very necessary ministry. The client list for Manna has increased greatly, especially over the last two years. Currently, the organization cares for 774 families.
A family must bring the following to sign up:
- A photo ID.
- A utility bill as proof of address. This confirms the family lives in the area Manna serves.
The service area includes Shamokin, Trevorton, Paxinos, Elysburg, Ranshaw and Excelsior. Manna is open three days a week, from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Clients can make use of Manna two times a month.
Different groups collect and donate non-perishable food items and provide support to Manna, without which the organization would close its doors.
Youth groups get involved by collecting money, non-perishable items and turkeys or hams during the holidays. Local churches have special "harvest home celebrations" for which parishioners bring in non-perishable items. Some churches even collect donations on a monthly basis. In the summer, local farmers bring in fresh produce and eggs. Thanks to donations like this, Manna continues to be a blessing for the area's needy.
