Man, young child die in I-81 crash
FRACKVILLE - A man and young child died when the car they were in crashed in the northbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Butler Township on Saturday morning.
The crash occurred in the area of mile marker 121.1 about 10:50 a.m., state police at Frackville said.
Police said Alberto Hernandez, 42, was driving a Suzuki Forenza north when he lost control, causing the car to go off of the left side of the road and down an embankment where it struck several trees and came to a stop on its roof.
Hernandez, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:05 p.m. by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak, Shenandoah. The 11-month-old child, Anastacia Marie-Carman Hernandez, who was restrained in a child safety seat, was also pronounced dead at 12:05 p.m. by Deputy Coroner David Truskowsky, Mahanoy City.
Firefighters from Englewood, Altamont, Minersville and Pottsville assisted at the scene along with Frackville EMS and Shenandoah ALS. The left lane of the highway was closed while emergency personnel worked at the scene and the vehicle was removed.
