Man steals, then wrecks car Police continue search for driver
SHAMOKIN - Police are continuing their search today for a badly injured man in his 30s who allegedly stole a car from the 200 block of South Shamokin Street early Saturday afternoon and wrecked it in a wooded area between Coal Run and Sagon before being picked up in a vehicle that was last seen traveling toward Marion Heights.
The bizarre sequence of events began at about 12:45 p.m. when a male allegedly stole a 2010 Chevrolet Aveo being rented by Jennifer Leonard, 43, of 219 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, from EZ Rent A Car, Pottsville.
Raymond Siko II said Leonard started the car before going inside her home for a brief period of time. When she came back outside, Leonard said she spotted the auto traveling at a high rate of speed north on Shamokin Street. Police said Leonard and her daughter attempted to follow the vehicle, but lost sight of it.
Siko said as Leonard was reporting the stolen vehicle to Northumberland County Communications Center, a dispatcher told her that a car matching the description of the stolen auto had been involved in an accident at 12:50 p.m. on Route 2026 between Coal Run and Sagon.
Police said Leonard and her daughter then drove to the scene of the accident. Police reported the alleged thief, who is described as being in his 30s, bald, standing approximately 5 feet, 10 inches, weighing approximately 170 pounds and wearing a gray hoodie or shirt and blue jeans, reportedly was driving the car toward Marion Heights when the vehicle exited the highway, sheared off a utility pole and crashed into several trees.
According to a passing motorist who reported the accident, the man involved in the crash, who was bleeding profusely from the head, was able to free himself from the wreckage and was picked up along the highway by an older male operating a gray vehicle believed to be a sport utility vehicle that fled toward Marion Heights.
Assisting with the investigation are Siko, Shamokin Patrolman William Zalinski and Coal Township Officers Edward Purcell and Matthew Hashuga.
